Sumida Ward is a special ward located in the eastern part of Tokyo.
Sumida Ward was born in 1947 after the Pacific War by merging the former Honjo Ward and the former Mukaishima Ward.
Surrounded by the Sumida River, Arakawa River, and Kyunakagawa River, the area is low above sea level.
Since the Meiji period, urbanization and industrialization have progressed, and in 1878, Honjo Ward was established in the southern part of the ward, which was once an urban area of Edo.
Many factories were located here, and Kinshicho and other areas flourished as towns for factory workers.
It suffered great damage in the Great Kanto Earthquake, and the urban area of Tokyo, which was repeatedly bombed at the end of the Pacific War, was once again reduced to ruins.
Honjo is one of the areas that make up the downtown area of Edo/Tokyo, and forms the outskirts of downtown Tokyo along with Shitaya, Asakusa, and Fukagawa.
Although Mukaishima has declined compared to its heyday, it continues to this day as one of the few geisha districts in Tokyo.
Sumida Ward is also famous for the location of the Ryogoku Kokugikan, where sumo wrestling is held.
In the Oshiage/Narihira district, the world's tallest self-supporting steel tower, the Tokyo Skytree, was opened in May 2012 for terrestrial digital broadcasting with a height of 634m.

About a late-night charge
A late-night charge of 1,000 yen will be charged for late-night reservations after 23:00 pm.
